A sporty 12-year-old girl was found dead by her twin brother after she started inhaling spray from deodorant cans. Jess Anderson was believed to have been abusing the substance for about a week when Tom discovered her body and aerosols next to her bed.
Jess began spraying the cans into clothing and sniffing them from there which led her brother to remove them from her room days before her death. The day before her death her mother had found the ''fantastic” athlete and footballer in a “zombified” state in her room but did not seek any further medical attention.
Coroner Katy Skerrett called the youngster's death “a monumental error of judgement by a young girl that lead to the most tragic consequence”. Recording Jess' death as accidental, Miss Skerrett said she ruled out the possibility that Jess had tried to commit suicide.
She said: “The evidence goes nowhere near the suggestion that Jess had intended to take her own life, or had suicidal thinking at this time. “I accept the results of the toxicology report, which showed volatile gases propane and butane, commonly found in deodorant cans, were clearly found in Jess' body. “It appears she was inhaling deodorant gases, and made a tragic error that lead to the most tragic consequences.”
Miss Skerrett told the court Jess was found face down on her bed at the family home in Quedgeley, Glos, at around 7.45pm on November 20 last year. When Tom could not wake his sister, their mother Theresa, 47, quickly telephoned for the ambulance. A multi-vehicle response attended the home, where extensive resuscitation and life support efforts were made.
Jess was transferred from her home to Bristol Children's Hospital, where she was declared dead at 9.03pm.
